The younger juniors of the Pogi team competed today against strong competition in a race in Italy, which took place in the town of Pieris. The race consisted of six flat laps of 7.2 km and two climbs to Doberdob and San Michele, totaling 83 km. Of the 80 cyclists who started, only 30 crossed the finish line.
The Pogi team was represented by Bastian Petrič, Vanja Kuntarič Žibert, Jakob Šlibar, Žiga Hamun, Mauro Mächtig, Matic Vintar, Nejc Podržaj, and Žiga Stare. Italian cyclist Rosatto won the solo breakaway, with a lead of more than a minute over his pursuers at the top of San Michele. Bastian Petrič was excellent in the sprint for second place, showing his speed and strength to take third place on the podium. This is his greatest success this season.
In addition to Petrič, other members of the Pogi team also performed well in the first chase group. Mauro Mächtig finished 13th, Nejc Podržaj 22nd, Jakob Šlibar 23rd, and Vanja Kuntarič Žibert 25th. Žiga Hamun, Matic Vintar, and Žiga Stare withdrew from the race this time.
The Pogi team coaches were pleased with the results of their protégés: "It was a very difficult race, with lots of climbs and descents. The guys showed fighting spirit and team spirit. Bastian was fantastic in the sprint, and the others helped him with good work in the group. This is a great success for our club and for Slovenian cycling."
The younger boys A and B of the Pogi team also proved themselves at the Italian race 18° MEMORIAL FEDERICO CARLET, which was 40 km long. In the boys A category, Miha Otoničar, who came second, and Jake Sosa, who came fourth, climbed onto the winners' podium. In the boys' B category, Franci Krajnc came second, Urban Hvastja fifth, and Gal Klun seventh.
The Pogi team boasts excellent results in international races and proves that it has great potential for the future of Slovenian cycling. Congratulations! 🚴♂️👏
